Does the weather suck? Yes. Are there lots of fun things to do? No.
It's an Air Force base with all that comes with it. The rec centers are great, can't say nothing about billeting because I never had to use it. North Texas weather is very changeable especially during the winter. It's not uncommon to get a foot of snow here. The South Bowling Lanes were recently updated. The golf course no longer exists here. It was made into an open space with frisbee golf and walking trails.
What should we look for in a place like Wichita Falls/Sheppard AFB? We look to see if we are with good folks, our family is safe and loved, and is God a part of our lives. Wichita Falls is not a Disneyland it's a place to raise your family and pass this part of our lives with great people.
A lot of good times there but of course that was the 64-65 and Nam awaited us. I don't know what you'r looking for in a military base? They are all the same people just get through your time. I made a lot of good friends there and the people in town were wonderful.
But, my daughter was born when I was stationed there and the people were like family to us when we felt we were alone.
I was born on Shepard air force base my dad who is the best man I have ever met was stationed there in 1960 I've always thought it was something to be proud of and still do
This is a terrible location to be in, first off. Secondly, TDY at this location, you had better bring your vehicle or better yet, ensure your RA allows for a rental car because you do not want to get stuck on base, especially for weekends at a time. Their chow halls, skip them, because they are bottom of the barrel on a good day. The dorm like hotelish rooms are disgusting and you may even be allowed the pleasure of sharing a bathroom with another patron. Everything sucks on this base: commissary, bx, class 6, hotel, chow hall, but they happen to have a nice track to run on and the gym was adequate enough reminiscent of Bagram. Go to Dallas on the weekends and don't bother checking out the local scenary as it's a few restaurants, a few strip clubs, and a whole lot of desolate land.
